Do I need a permit to burn?

YES - Every person, firm or corporation who kindles or causes to be kindled any fire or burns or causes to be burned any material, except when the ground is covered with snow, SHALL obtain a written fire permit from the Forest Fire Warden in the town or city where the fire will be kindled.  Your online fire permit meets this requirement.

Do I need a fire permit when the ground is covered with snow?

When the area within a 100 foot radius from the fire edge is covered with snow or other frozen precipitation sufficient to prevent the combustion of woodland fuels until the fire is completely extinguished, a fire permit is not required.  Before burning you should check with your local fire department for local restrictions.

What materials can be burned with a fire permit?

Only Burning of untreated wood, untreated pallets, campfire wood, brush, or charcoal is allowed.  Wood can be NO GREATER than 5 INCHES in DIAMETER.

How old do I have to be in order to obtain a fire permit?

You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a fire permit or be a permittee.

Is there a transaction fee involved when obtaining a fire permit online?

Yes -  A $5.50 internet transaction fee will be charged for each permit obtained through the online system.  The online transaction fee supports the development and maintenance of the online fire permit system.  The State of New Hampshire does not receive any portion of this fee.

Do I need a printer to purchase a permit online?

Yes. The permit you print at your printer is a valid, official permit and no other permit will be mailed to you. You may also want to print out the transaction receipt for your records.

When do Seasonal Permits Expire?

Seasonal permits are valid until December 31st of the year in which they are obtained.  For example, if you obtain a Seasonal Permit on January 6, 2024, it is valid through December 31, 2024.  Do not obtain your seasonal permit before January 1st for the year you want it. For example, if you obtain a Seasonal Permit on December 28, 2023, it will expire 3 days late on December 31, 2023.
