Dispose of household products safely. What Not to Flush

Don't pour solvents, pesticides, paint thinners, engine oil, or household cleaning products with hazardous chemicals down the drain or into a storm sewer. Take them to a recycling center or hazardous waste collection site that participates in these proper disposal methods (for more information Click Here). The Town of Newport Public Works occassionally hosts (approximately every 3 years) hazardous waste collection programs.  Cooking oils and grease should be collected in a container, covered, and disposed of as solid waste. Fats, oils, and grease collect in the sewer system and are a major cause of blockages and sewage back-ups.

Medication Removal
Many people do not know how to dispose of prescription medications and often times flush them down the toilet. Flushing drugs carry the risk of possible contamination of soil and groundwater. The Newport Department of Public Safety (Police Department) offers a Prescription Drug Drop Box for the Town of Newport and surrounding area. A secure mail slot is located in the entryway of the Newport Department of Public Safety lobby located on Main Street. Individuals can walk in and anonymously deposit unused or expired prescription medications twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Use fertilizers and pesticides carefully—and only as directed.

Try to find safe alternatives to products that can harm water supplies.
